Write for us

We welcome clear, original pitches about maps, landscapes, place names, regions and routes. A strong proposal gives readers a useful way to understand one specific question without requiring specialist knowledge.

What we are looking for

Pitch an evergreen subject that fits geography and place literacy: for example, a map convention, a landform, the history of a geographic term, or a way to compare how places are represented. We favour a defined question, a distinct angle and a practical explanation over broad surveys or lists of facts.

What to include

Tell us the proposed headline, the central question, what the reader will understand by the end, and why the subject suits Grand News Compass. Include a short summary of your approach and note any sources or examples the piece would depend on. Do not send a complete draft unless requested.

How to send a pitch

Send your proposal through the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. We consider pitches for fit, clarity, originality and whether the subject can be explained responsibly for a general reader. A pitch is not a promise of publication.

Our point of view

A map is a view, not the whole place

We look at the choices behind maps and the details beneath them. The aim is not to memorise every label, but to ask better questions about where we are.
